Not one of these people managed to stop racism. They managed to help make it a bit less socially acceptable, in exchange for their lives. And yet, we still have, and had powerful men like George Wallace, Lee Atwater, Ronald Reagan, Newt Gingrich and Willard Mitt Romney to stoke the flames of white racial resentment. We’ve straightened the drapes, but the house is still on fire.
